At IMC Kemps Creek, we are approaching the second of our four seasonal grading cycles for the year.
The martial arts grading system is a major part of the journey through Karate, BJJ, Kickboxing, and MMA. Each new rank represents more than just a belt or shirt — it reflects discipline, consistency, confidence, and personal growth.
At IMC Australia, every grading is another step toward Black Belt and beyond.
Why Training Gets Harder Before Grading
In the weeks leading up to grading, students at IMC Kemps Creek Martial Arts often notice classes become more intense.
That is intentional.
Our instructors increase the pace and difficulty of training so students can build the fitness, sharpness, and confidence needed to perform at their best on grading day.
Whether you train in Karate, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or Muay Thai Kickboxing, we encourage students to grade only when they feel ready.
What Happens on Grading Day?
A grading at IMC Kemps Creek is a formal event.
Students wear the correct uniform for their discipline:
- Kempo Karate students wear their traditional gi
- BJJ students wear their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gi
- Muay Thai Kickboxing students wear their ranked IMC shirt and shorts
Instructors sit formally at the grading table, and students demonstrate what they have learned over the past few months.
Mindset matters. Arriving focused, positive, and confident can have a big impact on performance.
What Instructors Are Looking For
A martial arts grading is not about perfection.
It is a chance to demonstrate:
- Technical improvement
- Effort and commitment
- Focus under pressure
- Growth since your last rank
At IMC Kemps Creek, grading is your opportunity to show how far your martial arts training has taken you.
Sparring and Practical Application
For many students, your grading will also include a sparring element.
This allows instructors to see students apply their techniques in a live setting while demonstrating timing, control, composure, and practical skill.
Why Grading Matters
Because gradings only happen once every three months, they are an important milestone.
Grading helps students:
- Build confidence
- Perform under pressure
- Receive direct feedback from their instructors
- Celebrate progress
- Share achievements with family and friends
At IMC Kemps Creek Martial Arts, grading day is always a great opportunity for loved ones to come and support students on their journey.
How to Prepare for Your Next Grading
The best preparation is consistent practice.
Students usually perform best when they:
- Attend classes regularly
- Listen carefully to instructor feedback
- Practice at home
- Review grading requirements early
We also recommend using the IMC Syllabus, available for purchase at the dojo, to help prepare for your next martial arts promotion.
