5 surprising ways karate can help develop your child’s fine motor skills

1. Balance

The funny thing about kicking is that you need to be standing on one leg to do it properly. But that’s not all – you would be surprised how difficult it is just to move from one stance to another.

Now Karate won’t stop your kid from falling over and scraping their knee, but it will better prepare them for the vast majority of all physical activity they will do in the future.

2. Posture

Having the ability to stand up tall and straight when waiting for instructions or keeping their shoulders in line when performing kata (a traditional pattern) leads to your child not only feeling confident with their newfound Karate skill, but also looking confident when they present themselves.

3. Co-ordination

Children who develop basic coordination skills at a young age will likely find more joy out of doing physical activity than those who missed out on the chance. Simply enrolling your child into Martial Arts lessons and getting body parts working together will set them up to enjoy being fit later in life!

4. Strength

This one may not be as surprising, but when making tomorrows athletes it is incredibly important to work on those strong bones and muscles.

We make our students do the hard yards with some push-ups and sit-ups, but we also play games to make strength-building fun, like Indian leg wrestling (link).

5. Breathing

And last but not least, probably the most important function of the body – but how does Karate improve your breathing?

For starters, pushing yourself with strenuous physical activity will improve and cardiovascular health and lung capacity. Also, we teach numerous breathing and meditation exercises to our students to bring their new and improved physical state in line with their mental state.
